Tracking Spending
I have been having some difficulty tracking all of our daily expenses and was wondering if anyone else does this? and what is the best way you have found to do it?
Also a follower of Dave Ramsey, so I do the all-cash system for groceries, household, gas. I never seem to find time to record each day, so the new system is: All the cash for the month (or week if keeping that much cash on you creeps you out) goes in a small zippered pouch. Cash goes out, receipt goes in. End of the month, receipts plus remaining cash should equal original amount. Then I can go over the receipts when I have time to analyze our spending.
My husband and each have a 4 x 6 manila envelope. We call it "petty cash". On the front of the envelope I staple a lined, columned sheet which tells how much money went into the envelope, how much money went out of the envelope, a brief explanation of the expense, and the new balance in the envelope. We only pull money out of the envelopes when we know we'll be needing some. Also, the money that goes into the envelope is in smaller denominations so that we don't have a $50 in our pocket (harder to remember too record all the items it was spent on) when we only needed $12. At the end of the month I put the expenses into checkbook.com and see where the money was spent, who spent what, and are we each spending reasonably.

That's a really good idea. I might just give that a try. Thanks!

That sounds like a good system, Jewel. I'm going to check out checkbook.com too!
